Not being a kid person by any stretch, I was really surprised at how much I loved teaching taekwondo to toddlers back in the day. You’d think it would be hellish chaos, but it’s this adorable at least 95% of the time.

…Dunno how I feel about letting them spar that young, though.

    +1 they’re not very good
+1 what are they doing sparring at that age?

Kicks are made of pure fail however they do seem to keep their feet in a recognizable stance, although they do nothing with their hands. I don’t know if the lack of hand movement is due to differences in sparring regulations, age categories, branches of the style, or what. I’d think they’d hold them in something resembling a guard position but they just kinda hang there for the most part.

My school here in the US had one little kid with a black belt but I think he was 8-9 when he first reached black. He was awesome enough that you knew he deserved it.

They seem trained to alternate legs when kicking. (Maybe that’s standard; I don’t know martial arts.)

Tiger toddlers are products of Dragon Mothers.. lol

+1 to the +1s you gave and +1 to the hands thing

I honestly think its those ridiculous chest pads getting in the way. Take em off and let them spar properly. Those pads are the worst invention in martial arts IMHO.

They mainly kick because modern “Korean” martial arts stress closing distance and kicks more than other areas. They do this because they were originally primarily developed for use by women; who’s legs are proportionally longer than men and usually had weaker arms. By stressing kicks it gave women either an advantage or at least more equal standing in a fight. It can also be noted that Tae Kwon Do and Tong Tsu Do are abstractions of Japanese arts, whereas other Korean martial arts more resemble Chinese martial arts. The reason for this is that Koreans were not allowed to practice “traditional” forms during the occupation, so they mimicked the Japanese forms and modified them for use by women in an attempt to reduce how easily they could be victimized.

Is that music from “My Neighbor Totoro”? I know the music at 2:15 is from Kamen Rider Kiva’s opening though. Awesome <3

  • JBee

The music that started at around 0:40 is the theme song from “Ponyo” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIzT_Mcj9eg&feature=related . It does evoke Totoro a bit, with the same kind of cute, upbeat sound.

  • Mitch

And of course, both Ponyo and Totoro are written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, with Joe Hisaishi doing the music for both films.

  • hana blume

better they should learn to play the violin
