Unfriendly Skies of the Day: A Ryanair passenger claims the low-cost carrier mistreated her stepfather, asking the latter to pay for food meant to help treat his cardiac arrest.
Billie Appleton says 63-year-old Per-Erik Jonsson went into cardiac arrest while en route from England to Sweden, and the staff did nothing to help. Appleton, a nurse, got Jonsson breathing again by striking his chest, and then called for a doctor and demanded oxygen for her stepfather. The staff, she says, diagnosed Jonsson with “low blood pressure” and gave him a sandwich and a soda. Once Jonsson’s situation stabilized, a flight attendant returned — to request payment for the snack.
A Ryanair spokesman defended the cabin crew, saying they followed procedure, offering to divert the plane to the nearest airport and send for an ambulance, but Appleton refused. Appleton and her family deny the spokesman’s claim, adding that no ambulance was waiting at their destination.
They are currently considering legal action.
