Controversial Ad Campaign of the Day: PETA is stirring up controversy (so what else is new, amirite?) with a new veganism campaign that pokes fun at the victim of recent shark attack.
21-year-old CJ Wickersham took a serious shark bite to his left thigh while spearfishing off Anna Maria Island. PETA’s response: “Payback is hell.”
“It may be an unusual way to get the message across,” PETA rep. Ashely Byrne said, “but I think it will cause people to be more sensitive towards fish.” Byrne added that PETA is glad Wickersham “is going to be alright,” but hopes his injury will cause anglers “to rethink fishing.”
At least one community is refusing to display what one fisherman called “PETA’s typical propaganda” — Anna Maria Island. “We have no billboards in the city, and we do not allow advertising on our trolley benches,” said Mayor Michael Selby.
