RIP: Joe Paterno, at 85

RIP: Joe Paterno, the legendary coach of Penn State’s Nittany Lions football team, passed away today of lung cancer. He was 85.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today,” said his family in a statement. “His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.”

Paterno — best known as JoePa — served as head coach at Penn State for 46 years, leading the Lions to 409 victories — the most by a single college football coach.

His final days at Penn State were sadly marred by the child sexual abuse scandal of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, and allegations that Paterno didn’t do enough to notify the authorities upon learning of the now-infamous “shower incident” between Sandusky and a 10-year-old boy.

Paterno was dismissed by the Board of Trustees on November 9th. He later called the scandal “one of the great sorrows of my life,” and admitted that he should have done more.

Prior to the official confirmation of his passing, a false death report by Penn State student news website Onward State spread online after being picked up by CBS Sports. It was quickly retracted — though not quickly enough — and Onward State’s managing editor, Devon Edwards, announced his resignation.

Another Follow Up of the Day: Penn State Students Riot After Paterno Ouster

Another Follow Up of the Day: Penn State Students Riot After Paterno Ouster

Another Follow Up of the Day: Thousands of Penn State students took to the streets of downtown State College last night to protest the termination of legendary Nittany Lions coach Joe “JoePa” Paterno.

What began as a relatively calm outpouring of support outside Old Main quickly descended into a full-scale riot as students became “increasingly belligerent” and began throwing rocks and tearing down street signs.

Tensions reached a boiling point after a lamppost and a local news van were toppled (see after the jump / more footage here).

End Of An Era of the Day

End Of An Era of the Day

End Of An Era of the Day: Joe Paterno is out as Penn State’s head football coach effective immediately.

The Board of Trustees announced the decision at a press conference a short while ago. Earlier today, Paterno said that he would retire at the end of his 46th season.

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will take over as interim coach. “Right now, I’m not the football coach, and that’s something I have to get used to,” Paterno told the AP shortly after his ouster.

Paterno had come under fire after it was revealed that he was made aware in 2002 of assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s alleged sexual assault of pre-teen boys, but decided merely to inform his superiors and take no further action.

University president Graham Spanier also resigned tonight; executive VP Rodney Erickson will act as interim president.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz had previously stepped down after being charged with with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Neither Spanier nor Paterno have been charged.

According to reports, a large crowd of JoePa supporters has gathered outside Old Main to voice their dismay at the board’s decision. The Daily Collegian says students are heading toward Beaver Canyon, where a demonstration will likely take place.
