Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Progress of the Day: KFC over the weekend released a statement denying claims it had opened its first Iranian branch in over 30 years.

The fried chicken chain closed up shop in the Persian republic following the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

The state-run Fars news agency published, then retracted a report that KFC was launching the first of several Iranian restaurants “with the goal of creating 20,000 jobs.”

The owner of the local “KFC franchise,” Amir Hossein Alizadeh, said he had spent five years working on obtaining permission “from the mother company” to open a restaurant in the city of Karaj.

But the Louisville-based poultry purveyor insists it did not authorize the use of its brand, and will pursue legal action against Alizadeh.

The statement went on to say that KFC does not intend to open an Iranian branch in the foreseeable future.

Barbie Ban of the Day

Jan. 20, 2012

Barbie Ban of the Day

Barbie Ban of the Day: In what it referred to as a “new phase” in its ongoing crackdown on “manifestations of Western culture,” Iran’s morality police has moved to shut down dozens of toy stores peddling in banned Barbies.

The doll, once referred to by an Iranian children’s agency as a “Trojan horse” of Western influence, has been prohibited for sale in the country since the mid-90s.

Iran attempted to introduce a number of “pro-family” Barbie knockoffs with a more modest fashion sense, but the dolls were no match for the miniskirt-wearing original.

Despite the recent wave of suppression, the Associated Press notes that it continues to be fairly easy to obtain a Barbie in Iran.

Frightening Flashback of the Day

Nov. 29, 2011

Frightening Flashback of the Day

Frightening Flashback of the Day: In a scene straight out of 1979, dozens of militant Iranian students stormed the British Embassy in Tehran today, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails, and clashing with riot police.

According to the Associated Press, the protesters burned documents and the British flag, and shouted “death to England.” One protester was seen waving a framed picture of the Queen; another was spotted carrying away a Pulp Fiction poster.

Embassy staff managed to flee through a back door, avoiding injury. Police eventually managed to disperse the crowd, but not before an Iranian flag was raised over the compound.

The violent rally follows a new set of sanctions imposed on Iran by Western countries over its ongoing nuclear program. In response to the sanctions, Iranian lawmakers voted to downgrade diplomatic relations with the UK.
