Special Election Results of the Day

Sep. 13, 2011

Special Election Results of the Day

Special Election Results of the Day: In a potentially prescient upset, voters in New York’s 9th congressional district elected Republican Bob Turner to replace disgraced Democratic congressmen Anthony Weiner, who resigned in June following a highly publicized sexting scandal.

Newcomer Turner surprised many by defeating state Assemblyman David Weprin in the heavily Democratic district where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 3 to 1.

The special election was largely viewed as a referendum on President Obama’s economic policies.

In Nevada, the Republican Party picked up another win, as Republican Mark Amodei easily bested Democrat Kate Marshall in the GOP-leaning 2nd District.

With tonight’s twin victories, the House split now stands at 242-192, advantage GOP.

Weiner Pulls Out of the Day

Jun. 16, 2011

Weiner Pulls Out of the Day: Rep. Anthony Weiner has resigned today over the sexting scandal that has surrounded him for the past few weeks.

“Today I am announcing my resignation from Congress so my colleagues can get back to work, my neighbors can choose a new representative and most importantly that my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused,” he said.

Weiner received a mixture of boos and calls not to resign from those in the audience. His wife, Huma Abedin, wasn’t at the news conference.

How About That of the Day

How About That of the Day

How About That of the Day: Gennette Cordova, the 21-year-old journalism student from Seattle who received the wiener tweet that launched Weinergate, was apparently something of a scandal-rod during her days at Shorecrest High School — at least enough to be dubbed “Most Likely to be Involved in a Tabloid Scandal” in a 2007 issue of her school’s newspaper.

Follow Up of the Day: Rep. Anthony Weiner Admits To Sexting With Six Women

Jun. 6, 2011

Follow Up of the Day: Rep. Anthony Weiner appeared before the press this afternoon after a short delay co-opted by none-other-than Andrew Breitbart to tearfully confess a series of “inappropriate communications” with six women he met online. He stressed that his relationship with these women had no physical component whatsoever, but refused to elaborate on the exact nature of the exchanges.

Weiner further admitted that the now-infamous underwear pic was in fact tweeted by him, and the hacking fabrication his used to cover it up was meant to protect his loved ones.

Calling his behavior “a destructive thing,” Weiner offered the media no clear-cut explanation for his actions, but said he knew what he was doing was a mistake. The congressman said he has no intention of resigning his post, believing he did not violate any law nor break the oath to his constituents.

Asked about how his marriage would fair in light of his admission, Weiner said he loves his wife “very much” and they two “have no intention of splitting up over this.” He later added that his wife had knowledge concerning some of these relationships “since before we were married.”

Meanwhile, ABC News posted an interview it conducted with Meagan Broussard, a 26-year-old woman who claims to have been one of the women with whom Rep. Weiner engaged in “a sexually-charged electronic relationship.”

Shirtless Politician of the Day

Jun. 6, 2011

Shirtless Politician of the Day

Shirtless Politician of the Day: Andrew Breitbart’s BigGovernment has been steadily dripping fuel on the flames of Weinergate by slowly leaking allegedly damning images of Rep. Anthony Weiner throughout the day, with the coup de grace being the shirtless pic above.

According to BigGovernment, a young woman has come forward with photos she claims were sent to her by Weiner on May 20 via a Yahoo! email account belonging to the Congressman. The same post goes on to say that, in addition to a pic very similar to the one that got the Weinergate ball rolling, another photo sent to the woman “leaves nothing to the imagination.”

“You’re going to know who this [young woman] is by tomorrow,” Breitbart said. She is going to come out of her anonymity in a very short time. She will be coming forward to communicate the means by which she received these photos. I think it will be clear that she is telling the truth.” ABC News has apparently conducted an interview with the woman, and is currently deciding when it will air.

Meanwhile, across town, another woman has come forward to allege that she received “200 sexually explicit messages from Weiner from a Facebook account the Democratic politician no longer uses.” According to RadarOnline and Star magazine who spoke with the woman jointly, Rep. Weiner allegedly told the woman he had a “ridiculous bulge” and when she ask for a photo he helpfully provided her with one.

Rep. Weiner is expected to address these new allegation at the press conference scheduled for 4PM ET.

Quote of the Day

May. 29, 2011

“Contrary to the impression that I apparently gave from my tweet, I am not his girlfriend. Nor am I the wife, girlfriend or mistress of Barack Obama, Ray Allen or Cristiano Ronaldo, despite the fact that I have made similar assertions about them via Twitter.”

–21-year-old journalism student Gennette Nicole Cordova, alleged recipient of Rep. Anthony Weiner’s alleged wiener pic, speaks out.

Big Deal of the Day: “Weinergate” [UPDATED]

May. 29, 2011

Big Deal of the Day: "Weinergate"

Big Deal of the Day: Long story short, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) allegedly tweeted a photo of his underwear-covered junk to a female follower.

The photo (sNSFW) — which was posted to the Congressman’s yfrog account on Friday night — was summarily deleted (along with all other photos) by Weiner himself. He then promptly tweeted that his Facebook had been hacked. However, the “incriminating” tweet was retweeted several times before Weiner managed to get to it, and an alleged screencap of his yfrog page was posted on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government.

Rep. Weiner, meanwhile, took the incident in stride, tweeting a Sherlock Holmes-themed joke at his own expense. He later told Politico’s Jonathan Allen and Ben Smith that he thought it was “obvious” that he had been hacked. “The weiner gags never get old, I guess,” he is quoted as saying. Weiner’s spokesman Dave Arnold told the New York Post that both the congressman’s Facebook page and Twitter account had been hacked.

Big Government remains adament that something isn’t adding up in Weiner’s claim that he was hacked; Daily Kos says this is nothing but a “sex smear,” and a commenter used Error Level Analysis (sNSFW) to prove the yfrog screencap was faked.

Meanwhile, the follower at the center of “Weinergate” — a Bellingham, WA-based journalism student — has since deleted both her Twitter and Facebook accounts (some say her online presence is being scrubbed). Bloggers on the right have gone so far as to claim that the 21-year-old is Weiner’s lover, putting up as evidence a tweet from Weiner referencing “Seattle time” and a tweet from @GennetteNicole calling him her “boyfriend.”

Among the questions being asked on the right is why Rep. Weiner never mentioned alerting the authorities to the hack. A better question might be, if this was indeed a nefarious hack aimed at destroying the Democrat, why use a photo of someone so handsomely endowed?

UPDATE: Meet @patriotusa76: A Weiner-obsessed Reagan Republican who was supposedly the only person quick enough to retweet the Congressman’s wiener.
