Allegedly Deadly Deal of the Day: A family in Miami is suing the recently bankrupted legacy carrier American Airlines and its caterer, LSG Sky Chefs, for allegedly killing one of its members with tainted airline food.
Othon Cortes reportedly consumed a chicken dish served on a flight en route to New York from Barcelona. His wife and daughter claim in the suit that the food was contaminated with bacteria, and ultimately resulted in his death.
Sky Chefs, the company that actually makes the airline food people often figuratively claim is lethal, is looking to have the case thrown out. It says it did not cater “the Barcelona flight in question.”
Cortes, according to court documents, felt “discomfort and pain that included sharp stomach cramps and sudden thirst” while awaiting a connecting flight to Miami. Once aboard the plane, Cortes experienced a cardiac event which forced the plane to land in Norfolk, Virginia.
A local hospital pronounced him DOA.
According to his family, Cortes died of consuming chicken contaminated with Clostridium perfringens — a common cause of food poisoning.
