Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers roommate of Tyler Clementi, was sentenced to just 30 days in jail today after being found guilty of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, evidence tampering, and other counts for using a webcam to tape Clementi in a sexual act with another man. Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, just days after he learned of the video and an accompanying Twitter feed.
Judge Glenn Berman’s lectured Ravi before announcing the relatively light sentence: “You lied to your roommate who placed his trust in you without any conditions, and you violated it. I haven’t heard you apologize once.” Ravi had faced up to 10 years.
In addition to his jail term, Ravi was ordered to complete 300 hours of community service; attend a counseling program for cyberbullying and alternative lifestyles; pay $10,000 to a group that helps victims of bias crimes; and serve a three-year probation sentence. Prosecutors plan to appeal.

It’s the feel-good story of the day: Redditor Logan Fernandes on Sunday shared the life-saving heroics of an Indiana firefighter who saved a kitty from a fire when it seemed all hope was lost.
Fernandes reported that his mom’s neighbor Vincent, whom Fernandes called “mentally challenged,” had left a candle burning in his apartment and one of his cats knocked it over.
He came home to his house in flames. After being told there were no other people inside, the fireman were resigned to let the cats go. While the guy was having an emotional breakdown about losing his cats (“They’re all I’ve got!” he kept saying) one of the firefighters searched for nearly 15 minutes and found one alive. [H]e stayed outside giving it mouth to mouth and oxygen for 20 minutes until she started purring again. Needless to say, he’s f*cking awesome.
Domino was taken to a vet, who promised the kitty is going to make a full recovery. Meanwhile, Reddit users have raised more than $3,500 for Vincent, who lost his other three cats and his apartment in the fire. He’s managing, but “having a hard time with it.”
Still no word on the identity of the hero fireman.

Director Maïwenn’s new docudrama Polisse follows the daily grind of the Paris Child Protection Unit — whose officers do battle with the most horrifying elements of society — and a photographer assigned to document their heroism and heartbreak. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2011, and is “like a whole season of the The Wire packed into a single film.” Yes, please. Out June 15.

Pastor Charles L. Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina, went on an anti-President Obama rant earlier this month during a sermon. Then he got off topic:
I figured a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers. Build a great, big, large fence — 150- or 100-mile-long — put all the lesbians in there… Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can’t get out… And you know what, in a few years, they’ll die.
He ended his sermon with this thought:
God have mercy. It makes me pukin’ sick to think about — I don’t even whether or not to say this in the pulpit — can you imagine kissing some man?
Notice the “Amens” from the congregation throughout.

Staff Sergeant Nick B. was on patrol in Afghanistan when he came across Bodhi tied up, covered in mud, and missing both ears and half his tail to some kind of torture.
“They were going to use him to fight other dogs as entertainment,” Nick said. “You could just tell he hadn’t been fed properly. He was really skinny and malnourished. When I saw that, it just broke my heart. I knew I had to get this dog out of here.”
Nick says the owners didn’t want to give Bodhi up, so he traded packs of cigarettes for him. Then he coordinated with the Puppy Rescue Mission to get Bodhi out of the country. The pair were reunited in Florida on Saturday.
“It’s so much better knowing I saved this dog from a life of eating scraps of trash and not knowing if he’s going to be shot,” Nick said. “I know his life will be so much better now. He’ll have a lot of land to run around on, a pool to play in, a loving family, and he’ll be fed properly and bathed. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Angel Del Rosario has been amassing New Era caps since 1991, and his collection now numbers more than 800.
“I don’t have a favorite,” he says. “I love ‘em all, they’re like my children.” Some he wears, but he buys two of each, so he’ll always have one in perfect condition. His family thinks he’s stupid for buying so many hats: “You only have one head anyway,” they tell him.
Still, he’s doubled down on his passion — he hopes one day to get married in a New Era fitted cap.
