Gay Marriage Endorsement of the Day

May. 18, 2012

 - Gay Marriage Endorsement of the Day

Same-sex weddings have no legal status in Japan, but that hasn’t stopped Tokyo Disneyland from giving them the OK.

“I wrote 10 years ago that I looked forward to the day when gay and lesbian couples could hold hands and go to Tokyo Disneyland,” said Taiga Ishikawa, Japan’s first openly gay politician. “I’m very happy.”

A full wedding ceremony in Cinderella’s castle, with Mickey and Minnie included on the guest list, costs about $95,000. The park is now accepting applications.

In Case You Missed It of the Day

May. 18, 2012

 - In Case You Missed It of the Day

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey on Thursday released several videos, crime scene photos, witness interviews, the autopsy report, and more documents relating to the February 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, and the new evidence begs the question: Can you “stand your ground” if you were the instigator?

Police reports written that night make it pretty clear Zimmerman took a beating — they say he had a bloody face and nose, and bleeding to the back of his head. The reports also include two witness accounts that back up Zimmerman’s version of events, describing a man on his back with another person wearing a hoodie straddling him and throwing punches.

Officer Christopher Serino, the lead investigator on the case, wrote that Zimmerman could be heard “yelling for help as he was being battered by Trayvon Martin.”

Still, one investigator concluded: “The encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman, if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement.”

DWI Sentence of the Day

May. 18, 2012

 - DWI Sentence of the Day

Meet Stephen Andrew Hall, a Texas man and habitual drunken driver who likely will spend the rest of his life in prison after a judge sentenced him to 45 years following his fifth DWI. Hall copped to having two beers, but his BAC later was found to be .18.

“The 45-year sentence was fitting considering his prior DWI history,” said the local DA. “[The] sentence ensures that he will not be able to drive a vehicle on our roads for a very long time.”

Kickass Kid of the Day

May. 17, 2012

 - Kickass Kid of the Day

As 9-year-old Josef Miles and his mother walked around Kansas’ Washburn University campus last weekend, he noticed a group of Westboro Baptist Church members picketing as people headed to graduation ceremonies.

Josef asked mom if he could create his own sign, and promptly staged a one-man protest. His sign, written in pencil on a tiny sketchpad, read simply, “God Hates No One.”

Sticking It To The Man of the Day

May. 17, 2012

 - Sticking It To The Man of the Day

In a largely symbolic — but nonetheless commendable — “f*ck you” to the likes of ticket vendors who charge exorbitant service fees, one jam band has scalped tickets to its own show.

Here’s how it went down, according to the New York Times:

One Friday afternoon recently, about 50 fans and friends of the band String Cheese Incident took $20,000 in cash to the Greek Theater in Los Angeles to take a small stand against the system — in this case, Ticketmaster.

With money advanced by the band, each person had enough to buy eight tickets at $49.95 apiece for the group’s show in July. Once all tickets were in hand, almost 400 of them, they were carried back to String Cheese headquarters in Colorado and put on sale again through the group’s website — for $49.95.

“We’re scalping our own tickets at no service charge,” explained Mike Luba, one of the group’s managers. “It’s ridiculous.”

SCI still charged $12 for postage to mail the tickets, so fans really only saved about $5, but still — movement’s gotta start somewhere.
