When Life Imitates SyFy of the Day: A killer whale was spotted battling a shiver of sharks off the coast of Blue Cliffs Beach in Tuatapere, New Zealand.
Eyewitnesses said the whale was herding the sharks towards Blue Cliffs’ shore. One of the sharks involved in the melee ended up getting beached.
According to a marine scientist with the New Zealand Department of Conservation, the whale’s behavior is consistent with a “classic orca hunting tactic.”
“I’d be picking that there would be several more killer whales in a staggered line out to sea from the beach there,” says Clinton Duffy, “so that whale that you see in the surf zone there is probably in there flushing fish offshore for the other ones to catch.”
Talented Teen of the Day: On the BoA-judged Korean singing competition K-Pop Star, 15-year-old Park Ji Min rolls over the competition with an adept cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
J.Y. Park was so impressed, he told the teen, “If I had a big bag beside me, I think I would kidnap you and bring you to my company.”
You know JYP, you can catch more flies with honey than with kidnapping.
Supercut of the Day: The plot of It’s a Wonderful Life recreated with clips from over 20 TV shows — and Back to the Future II.

This Island On Earth of the Day: An underwater volcano that recently erupted for the first time in over a century has led to the formation of a brand new island in the Red Sea’s Zubair archipelago.
The volcano was first sighted spewing lava on December 19th by Yemeni fishermen. The lava was cooled by the seawater, resulting in the new island.
It is unclear if the island is here to stay, but the 500-meter-wide land mass continues to expand suggesting it’s only a matter of time before the first Starbucks opens.
