I, For One, Etc. of the Day

I, For One, Etc. of the Day: According to Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaug of the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Kanzi, a 31-year-old bonobo in her care, became fascinated with making fire after watching the film Quest for Fire when he was only a year old.

“The movie was released about a year after Kanzi was born and was about early man struggling to control fire,” says Dr. Savage-Rumbaugh. “Kanzi watched this spellbound over and over hundreds of times.”

The chimp soon began collecting firewood and attempting to ignite it. “His demeanour when he focused on making fire was just like when he watched the movie,” says the doctor, who has clearly not watched enough movies herself to know this couldn’t possibly end well.

In addition to his fire-making skills, Kanzi can also understands some 2,000 words through a system of symbols called lexigrams.

Suffice it to say, if he develops a knack for riding horses I’m outta here.

Breaking Katy Perry And Russell Brand News of the Day

Breaking Katy Perry And Russell Brand News of the Day: The rumors can be denied no longer: Russell Brand has formally filed for divorce from his wife of 14 months, Katy Perry.

“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,” the comedian said in a statement. “I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

The couple spent months rejecting rumors of their relationship’s impending demise. “I’m really happily married,” Russell told Ellen last month. ” I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive.”

According to TMZ, Brand — who was recently spotted sans wedding band — may have “blindsided” Perry with today’s announcement.

The two exchanged vows in India on Oct. 23, 2010.

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day

Dec. 30, 2011

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: Last week, on Christmas Day, 18-year-old Ben Breedlove, a popular YouTube personality and amateur relationship advice guru, passed away.

The Austin teen, who had long struggled with a condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, died of an apparent cardiac arrest in his home.

A few days before his untimely demise, Ben took to his medium of choice to post a farewell video (part 1; part 2) in which he discusses his lifelong illness and recounts several near-death experiences, including one involving a vision of rapper Kid Cudi.

“Life is really f*cked up sometimes,” Cudi wrote on his personal Tumblr blog, “but I know Ben is at Peace, and I hope he gets a chance to sit and talk with my Dad. We love you Ben. Forever.”

He was laid to rest yesterday in his hometown. The memorial service at Gateway Church was attended by 1,400 people and livestreamed by local news station KXAN to over 11,000 online mourners.

A GoFundMe page soliciting donations to benefit Breedlove’s family has already raised nearly twice its initial goal of $5,000.

Words of sympathy and support also continue to pour in from nearly everyone who encounters Ben’s story.

“It’s very overwhelming for us and privilege for our family to be any part of that,” his mother, Deanne, told KXAN News. “It’s exciting to know that Ben planted a seed in people’s minds to begin thinking about things that really do matter in life.”

Second Time Around of the Day

Dec. 30, 2011

Second Time Around of the Day

Second Time Around of the Day: As a 99-year-old man prepares to divorce his 96-year-old wife after 77 years of marriage, another pair of nonagenarians exchanged vows after 40 years of friendship.

Retired Air Force Col. William Thomas — once President Dwight Eisenhower’s personal pilot — married his longtime pal Margaret McSpadden, a former antique shop owner, at their retirement home on James Island, South Carolina, this past Wednesday.

McSpadden is 91; Thomas turned 92 yesterday.

According to Kimberly Farfone, Bishop Gadsden’s development director, the newlyweds were good friends for over four decades — sharing meals, playing golf, and traveling the world along with their respective spouses.

Within the last two years, both lost their significant others, and moved into the assisted-living facility. Living next door to each other helped bring the two closer, and eventually they decided to take their relationship to the next level.

“He constantly surprises us with his sense of adventure, in every aspect of his life,” Thomas’s daughter Shelley said. “Of course we didn’t expect it, but we’re like, ‘OK, now here’s one more incredible thing he’s doing.’”
