Life-Saving Beer of the Day

Life-Saving Beer of the Day

Life-Saving Beer of the Day: A 52-year-old man stuck in the snow 40 miles outside Nome, Alaska, sustained himself on cans of frozen beer for three days before being rescued by a co-worker and a volunteer firefighter.

Clifton Vial told the Anchorage Daily News that he normally packs a sleeping bag, extra gasoline, and other supplies before heading out, but didn’t this time. All he had to his name were tennis shoes, jeans, a jacket.

His only source of food: Cans of frozen beer, which he consumed “like cans of beans.”

“I made an attempt at digging myself out and realized how badly I was stuck,” he said. “I would have been frostbit before I ever got the thing out of there.” He remained in his Toyota Tacoma, tucked into a sleeping bag liner and a bath towel, occasionally starting his truck for heat as temperatures outside dropped well below freezing.

“I tried to sleep when I could,” Vial told the paper, “but I knew that I might not wake up.”

Finally, after 60 hours, he was found by members of a search party near Salmon Lake. Vial said he would pay a visit to his doctor before going back to work.
