Last Stop of the Day: Now-former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain announced the suspension of his campaign today in a speech punctuated by a repeat recitation of Donna Summer’s “The Power of One” — a quote he acknowledged for the first time was plucked from Pokémon: The Movie 2000.
The decision to suspend his run for the nation’s highest office comes amid mounting allegations of sexual misconduct and extramarital affairs.
“I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction,” Cain told supporters in Atlanta. “[N]ot because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter.”
Prior to the announcement, Cain sent mixed signals about his intentions, arriving in Atlanta — hometown of his latest accuser, Ginger White — to attend the scheduled opening of a local campaign headquarters.
In his speech, Cain introduced a new website, which referred to as “Plan B,” through which he plans to “continue to be a voice for the people.”
The Guardian reporter Richard Adams points out that the significance of suspension versus withdrawal is not semantic: “Suspending his campaign…means Cain can still collect Federal matching funds in 2012.”
