Creepy Energy Conservation of the Day

Creepy Energy Conservation of the Day: A crematorium in Durham is reportedly set to install turbines in at least two of its burners in order to generate electricity from the energy produced during the cremation process.

If this story sounds familiar, it’s probably because a crematorium down the road in Redditch proposed using the heat from burning bodies to warm a local swimming pool earlier this year.

Durham plans to sell unused electricity to the National Grid.

“We calculate that we will have far more electricity than we can possibly need so we would be feeding a reasonable amount into the grid,” said the crematorium’s superintendent, Alan José. “If there is genuine spare capacity to generate electricity then we are certainly interested in investigating that. And if it was thought to be acceptable in the eyes of the public we would almost certainly pursue that.”

The Daily Telegraph says industry experts predict other crematoriums might follow in Durham’s footsteps.

The upgrade is part of a wider effort to reduce harmful emissions with the installation of new furnaces. At least one burner will be fitted with a “heat recovery system,” allowing the facility to heat itself with its own handiwork.
