Letter Of Note of the Day

Nov. 1, 2011

Letter Of Note of the Day

Letter Of Note of the Day: On the day the WWII Allies accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany’s armed forces — better known today as V-E Day — OSS intelligence operative Lt. Richard Helms penned the above letter to his 3-year-old son Dennis, using stationery he picked up from the personal stores of former dictator Adolf Hitler.

Transcript:

Dear Dennis,

The man who might have written on this card once controlled Europe – three short years ago when you were born. Today he is dead, his memory despised, his country in ruins. He had a thirst for power, a low opinion of man as an individual, and a fear of intellectual honesty. He was a force for evil in the world. His passing, his defeat – a boon to mankind. But thousands died that it might be so. The price for ridding society of bad is always high.

Love, Daddy.

Richard Helms went on to become the first and only director of the CIA to date to have been convicted of lying to Congress. His son Dennis is now a 69-year-old intellectual-property lawyer in New Jersey.

Amazing Airplane Piloting of the Day

Amazing Airplane Piloting of the Day: Move over, IranAir plane with missing front landing gear: The pilot of a LOT aircraft flying from New Jersey to Poland managed to execute a perfect emergency landing without a single wheel to soften the belly flop.

None of the 230 passengers on board were injured.

Video footage captured by local media shows the plane sending out a few sparks at it skids across the runway unassisted. Flight 16 circled Warsaw’s Chopin Airport for over an hour dumping fuel while every attempt was made to launch the landing gear.

Watch video of the crash landing after the jump:

Genuine Happiness of the Day

Genuine Happiness of the Day

Genuine Happiness of the Day: Redditor TheLake snapped this heartwarming photo of a Kenyan kindergartner who just finger-painted for the very first time.

They explain:

I took this photo while studying abroad in Kenya during the Spring of 2010. A few friends and I were about to climb Mt. Longonot when we stumbled upon a pre-primary (kindergarten) school. A week later we returned with school supplies for the 30+ students who attended the school. We have since started a non-profit organization to raise money to provide the children with a daily meal, school supplies, de-worming medicine, and a new school.

Thanks to the nonprofit, construction of a brand new school for the kids is scheduled to begin in January.
