Another Follow Up of the Day: Governor Apologizes To Tweeting Teen

Another Follow Up of the Day: Governor Apologizes To Tweeting Teen

Another Follow Up of the Day: Shortly after the Shawnee Mission School District released a statement saying Shawnee Mission East senior Emma Sullivan will not be forced to apologize to Gov. Sam Brownback for her critical tweet, the governor issued his own statement, apologizing on behalf of his staff.

“My staff overreacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize,” Gov. Brownback wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms.”

No word yet on whether the Brownback staffer who snitched to Sullivan’s school will be punished with an apology letter.

Earlier, the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri, Doug Bonney, rushed to the 18-year-old’s defense, noting that her offending tweet about Brownback sucking was “core” protected speech. ”It’s absolutely what the First Amendment was designed to protect,” he told the AP.

Sullivan herself saw the incident as “a good starting point to open up dialogue about…free speech and the power of social media and the power that people my age could potentially have.”

Since Tweetgate came to light, Sullivan has seen the number of her Twitter follows grow from 61 to over 10,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

Scaredy Cat of the Day: Animal Planet’s My Extreme Animal Phobia attempts to scare the fear out of a woman who is deathly afraid of kittens.

So, I’m guessing this woman’s homepage is not I Can Has Cheezburger.

Grumpy Old Men of the Day

Nov. 28, 2011

Grumpy Old Men of the Day: Former Canadian Football League rivals Joe Kapp, 73, and Angelo Mosca, 74, buried the hatchet right in each other’s face as the two came to blows during a CFL alumni luncheon that took place last Friday in Vancouver.

When Kapp, former QB of the BC Lions, offered Mosca, once a defensive tackle for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a flower as a gesture of reconciliation, the latter told the former to “stick it up your ass.” This didn’t sit well with Kapp, for who the 50-year-old wound of Mosca’s dirty tackle of running back Willie Fleming in the 1963 Grey Cup is still too fresh.

The crowd, initially mistaking the pair’s banter for friendly, didn’t intervene until it was clear that Kapp and Mosca were not engaging in harmless horseplay, but were in fact extended a feud nearly as old as the league itself.

World’s Worst Person of the Day [UPDATED]

Nov. 28, 2011

World’s Worst Person of the Day: In case you were wondering, yes — there are still some pretty awful people in the world.

British woman on London transport complaining that Britain is nothing now that ethnic minorities are in her country.

Beyond the staggering levels of venomous (NSFW) vile being spewed forth from this bigoted British blowhard’s mouth — in full view of her son, no less — I am absolutely shocked — shocked — by how calm everyone is being.

Makes you wonder how anyone could even become this intolerant.
