Say What Now of the Day: In what sounds like a classic knee-slapper from an Orwellian joke book, the Calgary-based oil and gas company Paramount Resources is naming the subsidiary overseeing it controversial oil sands operation after one of the world’s most beloved animation studios: Pixar.
“Paramount Resources Ltd. is pleased to announce the reorganization of all of the Company’s oil sands and carbonate bitumen interests into a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Pixar Petroleum Corp. (“Pixar”),” announced a press release.
The Disney Blog points out that, while shameless, there isn’t likely to be a trademark issue as “there shouldn’t be any real confusion among the public that they’re the same company.”
That being said, Paramount is clearly hoping at least some people might be persuaded to lessen their distaste for the environmentally disastrous oil sands extraction process if they associate it with Buzz or Sulley or Nemo.
Big Screen Animation makes note of a poignant coincidence: The negative environmental impacts of the Athabasca (Alberta) tar sands were well explored in a series of documentaries produced by none-other-than Leslie Iwerks — director of The Pixar Story and A Day in the Life of John Lasseter.
One of the documentaries Downstream, is available for viewing online.

Frightening Flashback of the Day: In a scene straight out of 1979, dozens of militant Iranian students stormed the British Embassy in Tehran today, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails, and clashing with riot police.
According to the Associated Press, the protesters burned documents and the British flag, and shouted “death to England.” One protester was seen waving a framed picture of the Queen; another was spotted carrying away a Pulp Fiction poster.
Embassy staff managed to flee through a back door, avoiding injury. Police eventually managed to disperse the crowd, but not before an Iranian flag was raised over the compound.
The violent rally follows a new set of sanctions imposed on Iran by Western countries over its ongoing nuclear program. In response to the sanctions, Iranian lawmakers voted to downgrade diplomatic relations with the UK.

Lights Out: “[Images of food] unite viewers who might otherwise have nothing in common; they plug directly into the primal craving for transitory pleasure, the desire not just to admire and then consume inventively prepared food, but also to serve (and be served by) people who love us.”

Fan Favorite of the Day: A mere two weeks after NBC’s much maligned announcement that it was indefinitely shelving its critically acclaimed primetime sitcom Community due to poor ratings, it was revealed that the very same shelved sitcom that supposedly no one watches won TV Guide‘s annual Fan Favorite Poll.
The stars of the show will be featured in three separate collectible covers — i.e. three glossy middle fingers to NBC — which are set to hit newsstands December 1st.
Some 300,000 people in all cast their vote in the poll. Community managed to top such notable favorites as Dexter, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Chuck, and The Vampire Diaries.
