Good Cop Bad Cop of the Day: Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. was arrested this week and booked on charges of trafficking methamphetamine.
The National Sheriff Association’s 2001 Sheriff of the Year is being held on $250,000 bond in the Arapahoe County Jail that bears his name: The Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.
Sullivan was arrested after he reportedly agreed to provide an informant with drugs in exchange for sex.
“The allegations of criminal behavior involving Pat Sullivan are extraordinarily disturbing,” said current Arapahoe County sheriff Grayson Robinson. “While the arrest of the former sheriff is very troubling, no one, and particularly a former peace officer, is above the law. This is the most shocking thing I’ve ever been involved with.”
Sullivan, who was lauded as a “hero” by the Rocky Mountain News upon his retirement in 2002, spent 2007 and 2008 helping state and local task forces develop plans for eliminating the methamphetamine menace.
After being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of School Resource Officers, the organization’s director, Curtis Lavarello, praised Sullivan for spending his entire career “making every effort to keep children safe.”
