Kidnapped Catcher of the Day

Kidnapped Catcher of the Day

Kidnapped Catcher of the Day: Washington Nationals rookie catcher Wilson Ramos was abducted last night from his home in the two of Santa Ines, Venezuela, by four armed assailants.

Police say they found the SUV used in the abduction abandoned in the nearby town of Bejuma. “It’s a very important find,” said Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami, who promised to find the 24-year-old. ”The best investigators we have” were on the case, he said.

So far there has been no word from Ramos’s abductors, and the vice president of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, Domingo Alvarez, acknowledged that they were “worried.”

“Every Major League player has his own security, but we don’t know if at that time he had his security there,” Alvarez told the Associated Press.

There were 618 kidnappings reported in Venezuela in 2009. Numbers were not available for 2010 or 2011, but they are believed to be higher still. Though this is the first time a Major League player has been abducted in Venezuela, relatives of players have been seized in the past.
