Scenes From A Marathon of the Day

Scenes From A Marathon of the Day: Participating in this year’s New York City Marathon was none-other-than New York Times cartoonist Christoph Niemann, who decided to keep his Twitter followers up-to-date on his status by live-tweeting real-time illustrations (part 2) of his progress as he made his way toward the finish line.

Niemann’s compulsive doodling was his ultimate downfall: He was eventually surpassed by Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, who went on to set a new course record with a time of 2:05:06.

Mutai set a course record at the Boston Marathon earlier this year, finishing at 2:03:02 — unofficially the fastest marathon ever. Ethiopia’s Firehiwot Dado placed first in the women’s race, overtaking Mary Keitany in the home stretch.
