Photo Series of the Day

Photo Series of the Day: A fairly depressing series of photographs from North Korea’s version of the happiest place on Earth: Mangyongdae funfair.

The amusement park, located a few miles north of Pyongyang, is the last of its kind in the dreary dictatorship, and certainly fits the milieu.

Chock full of dilapidated and downright dangerous rides, Mangyongdae tests its deadly attractions on local farmers before allowing foreign visitors aboard.

Not The Onion About The Onion of the Day

Oct. 30, 2011

Not The Onion About The Onion of the Day: A story published by The Onion about a new parent education study attributed to the California Parenting Institute of Santa Rosa resulted in major headaches for the 33-year-old nonprofit when many parents took the satirical publication seriously.

According to the The Onion, CPI had determined that there wasn’t a single style of parenting that didn’t cause children to become “profoundly unhappy adults.” All parenting methods were equally successful at yielding grown ups who were bitter, isolated and utterly “unprepared to contend with life’s difficulties.”

The institute’s executive director, Robin Bowen, said she had a hearty chuckle when the article was brought to her attention by her daughter. But the laughter stopped as soon as she reached the office.

Bowen and others spent the day fielding calls from parents worried that there was really nothing they could do to raise their children right. “It’s obviously not OK to list our agency,” said CPI director of marketing and development Wendy Hilberman, “even in satire.”

CPI was eventually forced to release press statement denying the existence of the study and dismissing its results. “The falsified study quoted in The Onion states that all parenting styles lead to the same outcome — unhappy, miserable adults,” CPI says in its statement. “We have been around a long time because we know that parent education does work.”

The Onion responded with a comment saying this wasn’t the first time an article they published was mistaken for hard news.

Sonoma State University communications studies professor Jonah Raskin says people should be more skeptical of content their read online. “If you go online, you will find all kinds of things that are false and misleading about products and individuals,” he said. “If anyone takes The Onion seriously, they are sadly misunderstanding The Onion.”

Well This Is Something You Don’t See Every Day of the Day

Oct. 30, 2011

Well This Is Something You Don’t See Every Day of the Day: A Miami police officer pulled over for reckless driving by a Florida Highway Patrol officer was ordered out of his car at gunpoint, then handcuffed and detained in an incident caught on the trooper’s dash cam.

State patrol officer D.J. Watts pursued the zigzagging Miami officer, 35-year-old Fausto López, for nearly five minutes at speeds topping 120 miles per hour. When he finally stopped, Watts approached the vehicle with her gun drawn “for her own safety.”

Lopez told the trooper he moonlights at a private school during off-duty hours, and was rushing to avoid being late. López was charged with second-degree reckless driving and released.

“We immediately launched an administrative investigation,” a Miami Police spokesman told The Miami Herald. “However, we’re taking a back seat, and watching the criminal process as it takes place. At the conclusion of the criminal process we will take whatever administrative action we deem necessary.”

Miracle Dog of the Day

Oct. 30, 2011

Miracle Dog of the Day: A 5-year-old beagle who somehow managed to survive 17 minutes inside a gas chamber at an Alabama dog shelter is now up for adoption.

Nicknamed the “miracle dog,” Daniel was slated to be put to sleep by the overcrowded shelter. The three other dogs placed inside the gas chamber with him did not survive the ordeal, but Daniel was found not only alive, but well, and wagging his tail.

Pilots N Paws flew Daniel out to a New Jersey-based rescue, where he is currently waiting to be rehomed. According to Elevent Hour Rescue president Rachel Schiller, he likely won’t be waiting long.

After Daniel’s story appeared in The Star-Ledger, Schiller received over 200 emails from people interested in adopting Daniel.

“We have dogs that are just as wonderful as him that were on death row, but didn’t walk out of a gas chamber,” reminds Schiller. “They’re happy and they’re wagging their tales and ready to be adopted.”
