Good Turn of the Day

Good Turn of the Day: The Denver mother of a 7-year-old boy who identifies as a girl says she was told by a local Girl Scouts leader that her son could not join the troop because he has “boy parts.”

According to Felisha Archuleta, the person she spoke with said they didn’t want trouble from parents or supervisors. “It was like somebody told me I can’t like girl stuff,” Bobby Montoya told 9NEWS, “and I have to change my name to something else.”

Archuleta says Bobby has been dressing up and acting like a girl since he was two. “He’s loved girl stuff, so we just let him dress how he wants, as long as he’s happy.”

After being reached for comment, Girl Scouts of Colorado released a statement saying it is “an inclusive organization” that “is working to best support [transgender] children, their families and the volunteers who serve them.”

The statement goes on to add that the individual responsible for turning Bobby away “was not aware of our approach.” Her supervisor was made aware of the situation, and “immediately began working with the family to get the child involved and supported in Girl Scouts.”
