Breaking News of the Day: 24-year-old Amanda Knox — nicknamed “Foxy Knoxy” by the tabloid media — was acquitted today of the murder of Meredith Kercher, a British exchange student whom she met while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, and is free to go after spending nearly four years behind bars.
Knox stands guilty of defaming her then-employer, Patrick Lumumba, who was briefly detained by police, and has been ordered to pay his legal fees.
Knox’s former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, has also had his murder conviction overturned by a jury of six civilians and two judges.
Rudy Guede, an acquaintance of Knox and Sollecito, was convicted in 2008 of murdering Kercher and sentenced to 30 years in prison, though his sentence was later reduced to 16 years on appeal.
