War On Common Courtesy of the Day

Sep. 29, 2011

War On Common Courtesy of the Day: Steve Cuckovich, a Northern California teacher, has banned the customary post-sneeze response “bless you” from his health class.

Cuckovich told ABC 30 Action News that, despite what some might think, this isn’t an anti-religion thing — it’s an antediluvian thing.

“When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body,” says Cuckovich. “So they were saying, ‘god bless you’ for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, I said what you’re doing doesn’t really make any sense anymore.”

For a while, Cuckovich was even subtracting points from the tests of students who would flout the ban, but parents complained so he stopped.

Man Getting Hit By Baseball of the Day

Sep. 29, 2011

Man Getting Hit By Baseball of the Day: Pinch hitter Dan Johnson kept Tampa Bay alive last night with a miraculous home run in the ninth to tie the game.

Every Rays fan jumped for joy except one: The poor dude who was too busy doubling over after reaching for Johnson’s homer with his Johnson.

Follow Up of the Day: Randy Phillips Comes Out To His Mom

Sep. 29, 2011

Follow Up of the Day: Randy Phillips, the formerly anonymous, now-openly-gay military airman who came out to his dad on the day “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was repealed, follows up that feel-good footage with a sobering chaser: Coming out to his “more conservative” mother.

Sounds to me like someone could have used the “Is My Son Gay?” app. I KID! That thing’s messed up.

Say What Now of the Day

Sep. 29, 2011

Say What Now of the Day

Say What Now of the Day: Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, and Swati Dlamini — three of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former South African president Nelson Mandela’s adult grandchildren — announced today at a press conference that they were teaming up with American producer Rick Leed to develop a reality TV show based on their lives.

“This is about three women breaking away from the Mandela legacy to find their own feet,” director Graeme Swanepoel said.

Why would you ever want to break away from the Mandela legacy? Well, as long as they’re not the African Kardashians.

“We’re definitely not the African Kardashians,” said Amuah.

Good.

The show is set to air next year.

Controversial Ad Campaign of the Day

Sep. 29, 2011

Controversial Ad Campaign of the Day

Controversial Ad Campaign of the Day: PETA is stirring up controversy (so what else is new, amirite?) with a new veganism campaign that pokes fun at the victim of recent shark attack.

21-year-old CJ Wickersham took a serious shark bite to his left thigh while spearfishing off Anna Maria Island. PETA’s response: “Payback is hell.”

“It may be an unusual way to get the message across,” PETA rep. Ashely Byrne said, “but I think it will cause people to be more sensitive towards fish.” Byrne added that PETA is glad Wickersham “is going to be alright,” but hopes his injury will cause anglers “to rethink fishing.”

At least one community is refusing to display what one fisherman called “PETA’s typical propaganda” — Anna Maria Island. “We have no billboards in the city, and we do not allow advertising on our trolley benches,” said Mayor Michael Selby.

No Nostradamus of the Day

Sep. 29, 2011

No Nostradamus of the Day: The one time he’s got something positive to say, Boston sports writer Dan Shaughnessy makes a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad prediction just before last night’s appropriate capping of the Red Sox’ historic collapse.
