RIP: Arch West, at 97

RIP: Arch West, best remembered as the former Frito-Lay marketing exec who gave the world Doritos, passed away in Dallas last week at the age of 97.

The story goes that West, a VP of Marketing for the Dallas-based food company Frito-Lay at time, stumbled upon a vendor selling fried tortilla chips while vacationing in San Diego with his family in 1961.

He pitched the snack to corporate, but did not receive much enthusiasm for the product. However, in 1964, after market research returned positive results, Doritos became the first tortilla chip to be launched nationally.

Graveside service will be held October 1st. West’s daughter Jana Hacker told The Dallas Morning News his family plans on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn.”
