Spontaneous Human Combustion of the Day: 76-year-old Irishman Michael Faherty, who was found inside his burnt residence, reportedly died as a result of spontaneous human combustion in what is believed to be the country’s first recorded case of the little-understood phenomenon.
Though Faherty’s fireplace was lit at the time of his death, both a crime scene investigator and a senior fire officer concluded that it was not responsible for the man’s death. Similarly, no traces of an accelerant, nor signs of outdoor entry were found at the scene.
A pathologist who examined Faherty’s body noted that he suffered from diabetes and hypertension, but that those conditions did not contribute to his demise.
“This fire was thoroughly investigated,” west Galway coroner Dr Kieran McLoughlin told The Independent, “and I’m left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation.”
