RIP: Tom Wilson Sr., at 80

RIP: Tom Wilson Sr., a former American Greetings creative director better known as the creator of the long-running comic strip Ziggy, passed away Friday from pneumonia. He was 80.

Ziggy, which follows the misadventures of a pantsless pet-lover, has been in syndication for 40 years, and currently appears in over 500 newspapers.

“Tom leaves behind a wonderful legacy in Ziggy, a hard-luck comics page hero who serves as a reflection of Tom’s endearing wit and optimism in the face of adversity,” said John McMeel, president of Andrews McMeel Universal, which owns the company that syndicates Ziggy.

His son, Tom Wilson Jr., has been responsible for keeping the strip alive since the late 80s, but Wilson Sr. regularly assisted in its production until 2002, and his influence remains palpable to this day.
