Meanwhile, In El Salvador of the Day: Some 90 years ago, a volcanic eruption chased the residents of Nejapa, El Salvador, from their homes, and ultimately destroyed the town. On August 31st, folks in Nejapa mark the disaster’s anniversary with a unique tradition: Hurling fireballs at each other.
Why fireballs? Well, according to local lore, the eruption and subsequent lava stream were, in actuality, St. Jerome and the devil duking it out with fire.
Also: Because fireballs are awesome.
