Mural Marriage Proposal of the Day

Jun. 1, 2011

Mural Marriage Proposal of the Day: 28-year-old Jeff Gurwin commissioned Bronx-based muralists TATS CRU to create “the world’s most creative marriage proposal” for his girlfriend Caitlin on a wall in the East village.

Sure, this has been done before, but so what? It’s just as romantic the second time around. Why can’t you just be happy for them? Is it because you hate love? It is, isn’t it? Well, get over yourself. Love is awesome.

BAMFs of the Day: The Skilled Veterans Corps

Jun. 1, 2011

BAMFs of the Day: Over 200 retired Japanese professionals — dubbed the Skilled Veterans Corps — have volunteered to help bring stability to the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The volunteers — all over 60 years old — are lobbying the government to be allowed to replace some of the younger employees at the power station. “I am 72 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live,” says 72-year-old Yasuteru Yamada, a former engineer. “Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer.”

Though grateful, both the government and TEPCO remain tentative about accepting the senior citizens’ offer. “It is on the way but it is a very, very sensitive issue politically,” Yamada told BBC News. Goshi Hosono, the prime minister’s special adviser to the nuclear crisis, controversially referred to the group as the “suicide corps” during a recent a press conference.

“I don’t think I’m particularly special,” Michio Ito, a retired primary school teacher, is quoted as saying. “Most Japanese have this feeling in their heart. The question is whether you step forward, or you stay behind and watch.”

Movie Trailer of the Day

Jun. 1, 2011

Movie Trailer of the Day: The first official green band trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released last night to coincide with the sudden disappearance of the allegedly pirated red band trailer from the web. Sony says reports that the company purposely leaked the shaky screengrab to generate buzz are untrue.

Either way, the fantastic Karen O/Trent Reznor cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” remains intact, so it’s all good.

The film, which stars Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, is due in theaters December 21.
