To Catch A Crime Boss of the Day: According to the Boston Globe, the FBI’s arrest of infamous Boston-area mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was made possible by a tip produced as a direct result of a recently launched media campaign aimed at women, which, rather than focus on Bulger, centered instead on the whereabouts of his last-known companion, Catherine Greig.
The ads, which were attached to shows with a substantial female audience, mention Greig’s penchant for plastic surgery, as well as her frequent teeth cleaning sessions. The unorthodox approach to solving the 16-year-old case drew scorn from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Bulger expert Howie Carr. “I don’t know why they are running all these spots on American TV,” Carr told Bill O’Reilly shortly after the campaign’s launch, “because I don’t think they have been here for a long time.”
As we now know, “Charles and Carol Gasko” were found living it up in a one-bedroom apartment in Santa Monica, which the Globe says was full of “cash and guns.”
The two are in Federal custody, and are expected to appear in court tomorrow ahead of an expected extradition to Massachusetts where both face multiple charges.
