This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: A blogger in Taiwan was fined NT$200,000 (US$7,000) and sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years probation for calling a restaurant’s beef noodles “too salty” in a blog post.
In addition to criticizing the Taichung-based restaurant’s food, Liu also complained of cockroaches, and called the owner a “bully.” She was subsequently sued for defamation.
A district court ruled that the bad review “exceeded reasonable bounds,” and ordered her jailed for 30 days. Liu appealed to the High Court, but lost again when the judge decided she was wrong to generalize about the saltiness of the food, as she had only consumed a single dish.
A lawyer who commented on this case reminded bloggers to be “objective and fair” and “supplement their comments with photographs to protect themselves.”
