Follow Up of the Day: Gay Girl In Damascus Hoaxster Confesses

Follow Up of the Day: As the saying goes: On the Internet, nobody knows you’re not an openly lesbian blogger from Damascus.

40-year-old Tom MacMaster, an American from Georgia, confessed today to having fabricated the identity of A Gay Girl in Damascus blogger Amina Arraf — an online persona he spent years cultivating.

“I never expected this level of attention,” MacMaster wrote on his blog in a post titled “apology to readers.” “While the narrative voice may have been fictional,” he goes on to say, “the facts on this blog are true and not mısleading as to the situation on the ground. I do not believe that I have harmed anyone — I feel that I have created an important voice for issues that I feel strongly about.”

MacMaster, who moved to Edinburgh last year to study at the University of Edinburgh, is currently vacationing with his wife in Istanbul. When reached for comment by The Washington Post, MacMaster initially denied having heard of Amina, but mounting evidence suggesting otherwise forced him to eventually relent and apologize.
