RIP: Shrek the Sheep — who won over the hearts and minds of Kiwis everywhere (but mostly in New Zealand) when he was found six years after straying from his herd “sporting a massive fleece that made him appear three times his normal size” — had to be put down by his owner, John Perriam, due failing health. He was 16.
Shrek was so popular in his native land that the shearing of his 60-pound coat was broadcast live on national television. Shrek even got to meet then-PM Helen Clark, and had his story told in several children’s books.
“At the end of the day, it is the death of an iconic Kiwi,” said Josie Spillare of the Cure Kids charity, for whom Shrek made regular money-raising appearances. “He just happens to be a sheep.”
