Mad As Hell of the Day

Mad As Hell of the Day: Bronx resident Freddy Caldwell was arrested Friday and charged with “falsely reporting an incident and aggravated harassment” after threatening to blow up local CW affiliate WPIX over Two and a Half Men reruns.

According to a police report, Caldwell called the station twice to request that they stop airing reruns of the CBS sitcom, threatening to bomb their headquarters if they did not.

This Might Not End Well of the Day

Draconian Drug Law of the Day

Draconian Drug Law of the Day: The Netherlands’ right-wing coalition government, buttressed by Geert Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom, has announced plans to severely restrict access to the country’s world renowned “coffee shops,” banning entrance to all foreigners, and imposing membership requirements on local patrons.

“In order to tackle the nuisance and criminality associated with coffee shops and drug trafficking, the open-door policy of coffee shops will end,” wrote the Dutch health and justice ministers in a letter to parliament.

Dutch residents will be required to sign up for a one-year membership before being permitted to patronize a coffee shop. Each coffee shop will be allowed to dispense a maximum of 1,500 memberships, meaning many locals will likely have to seek other means of procuring pot.

The measures will be rolled out in the south this year, before making their way up north in 2012.

Follow Up of the Day: Will Norton Found Dead

May. 28, 2011

Follow Up of the Day: YouTube personality Will Norton, who was ejected from his Hummer during Sunday’s Joplin Tornado, was found dead.

His aunt confirmed the news last night; a news conference is scheduled for later.

According to reports, the 18-year-old was on his way home with his father Mark after receiving his high school diploma, when the tornado touched down in Joplin. They were a short distance from their house when the twister caught up with the car, causing it to flip it over. Mark remains hospitalized.

The Joplin Tornado death toll now stands at 139, bringing the total number of tornado-related deaths in 2011 to 520.

RIP: Gil Scott-Heron

May. 27, 2011

RIP: Legendary poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron — alternately labeled the father, forefather, and godfather of hip hop — passed away this afternoon in New York’s St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. He was 62.

Scott-Heron’s UK publisher Jamie Byng tweeted the news earlier this evening: “Gil Scott-Heron’s death is NOT a rumour. I just called by Dorothy who is staying with Aunt Mimi in NY to tell me the news. I’m so sad.”

Just last year, Scott-Heron released his thirteenth studio album I’m New Here — his first to feature original material in nearly two decades.
