RIP: Claude Stanley Choules

RIP: Claude Stanley Choules, the last living World War I combat veteran, passed away today in a nursing home in Perth. He was 110.

Choules joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15, and served aboard the battleship HMS Revenge, the flagship of the First Battle Squadron, where he witnessed the surrender of the German Imperial Navy. Later, Choules was also witness to the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow.

Choules’ passing leaves UK-resident Florence Green, a WWI Officer’s Mess Steward, as the last known living veteran of the Great War.
