F-A-I-L of the Day

Feb. 28, 2011

F-A-I-L of the Day: Premature excitement on the part of a male cheerleader nearly cost the the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team the game after said cheerleader ran on to the court and tossed the ball in the air with 0.3 seconds left on the clock.

The clumsy celebration was ruled a technical violation, providing Lousiville’s Pittsburgh rivals two free throws which, luckily, were not enough to top the Cards. “The male cheerleader is coming to an end,” Louisville coach Rick Pitino said jokingly at the post-game presser. “It was good while it lasted.”

Scary Surveillance Footage of the Day

Feb. 28, 2011

Scary Surveillance Footage of the Day: Washington Metro has released security footage from a major escalator malfunction which occurred on Oct. 30th — the day of the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear — when a downward escalator suddenly sped up, resulting several injured riders.

“Initially the reaction was oh good we’re moving faster,” escalator rider Peyton Robertson told Fox 5 News. “Then in about a split second I realized that’s not good. This escalator’s out of control and we were hurtling towards the bottom.”

Metro blamed the incident on “a failure of the braking system to stop when the over-speed safety switch activated.”

End Of An Era of the Day

Feb. 28, 2011

End Of An Era of the Day

End Of An Era of the Day: An ornery Savannah resident’s complaint about a Girl Scout cookie-selling station at the intersection of Oglethorpe Avenue and Bull Street brought to a close a decades-old Girl Scouts tradition of setting up shop outside the childhood home of the organization’s founder, Juliette Low.

According to Savannah zoning administrator Randolph Scott, the location of the troop’s table — a public sidewalk — violates city ordinance. He says he tried to find a loophole or a workaround, but to no avail. “I know it doesn’t look good,” Scott is quoted as saying. “However, other businesses won’t care if it’s the Girl Scouts or March of Dimes. They’re going to say, ‘Why can’t I sit out front and solicit business?’.”

Downtown Savannah Alderman Van Johnson said he was looking into convincing the City Council to grant the Girl Scouts a variance to allow them to sell outside Low’s house during the cookie season.
