They need to take lessons from Bobby Lee

North Korea is endlessly fascinating. It’s amazing to contrast South Korea’s vibrant and booming entertainment industry with North Korea’s gray and limited propaganda machine.

It’s easy to look at a country and simply sum them up as communists, but as you can see here, they’re people. They sleep, eat, watch tv like us. It gives us a personal look into their lives. Thanks The Daily What!

Did anyone else notice the calendar in the elevator of the girl’s apartment building? 6 day work week with 2 days of weekend in red font. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Dear Leaderday?

Can’t seem to find any mention of the North Korean calendar anywhere, does anyone have more info?

  • Dougieb

I agree, our own government has no idea what’s going on that country, to get a glimpse like that is truly rare.

It’s interesting to see the subtleties – the “elite status” of the citizens, yet one of the guys still has stains on his tie. And that apartment is the equivalent to Madison Ave penthouse.

And did anyone notice the three leaders above their piano? It used to be just two, it looks like that fat son is now official (even though his portrait showed him being skinny)

  • salemthegoddess

    wow. that was 1984.

  • Teri

Yes, thank you! It’s always fun to learn more about North Korea, even though the only times they film, they are only allowed to film people who are powerful and respected in the party. I liked how Ru Yun Mi was able to convince her family to let her take acting, she takes it so seriously, they all do!

  • Tom

Terrifying, truly terrifying. Kim Jong Ill is nothing short of a God to these people. So scary how they all repeat the same messages they’ve been “programmed” to say almost…

  • Anon

    Very interesting.

  • salemthegoddess

glad i’m not the only one who thought that.

  • Octopusballs

It’s very clear that with all of the restrictions and the delayed access, this whole filming was a staged attempt by the North Korean government to try and show the outside world that their is actually happiness and normality in their country when in reality this is very far from the truth. Al Jazeera has presented it without much comment, perhaps for further access to North Korea in the future, but a little honest reaction on their parts would help to put the segment in perspective…

  • Josh

    almost?

  • Anon

Truly amazing, and in a way, very beautiful. Yes, they have perhaps less than stellar housing, face multiple power outages everyday, and have to often work in freezing environments, but it’s a marvel to see these people are so happy and so devoted nonetheless. I really do envy the raw conviction that they possess, I mean it’s possible that it is all a facade, they are actors after all, but perhaps it isn’t, and perhaps the North Koreans really are better off than everyone else in the world, who are endlessly unhappy and unsatisfied.
Then again, these are the most privileged of their society.

  • Jim

I feel bad for these people. They are totally brainwashed. They have no idea what its like outside of their country. Is everyone content there? Why are there no revolutions?

  • RTsays

    Dear Roggy,

Maybe I’m wrong but all I saw was a normal 7-day week.

    13 14 15 16 17 18 in black
    19 in red

    that’s seven days…

Isn’t all TV and FILM propaganda in some sort of way. The maker of the title just want to hypnotise you and make your mind follow his or hers agenda for the matter.

Im not mad or angry, I’m just sayin’

  • http://zanasbriefcase.com Zana Andreas

The narrative voice in this clip is just so scary, WHY SO SAD? They look happy, dont speak in that tone mister!

  • Cannibalist

They also believe their fat little pudgy leader is God incarnate.

  • Cannibalist

Yeah, the people of Jonestown were pretty happy, too.

  • Tom

I meant to write, they’ve been almost “programmed” to say…

  • kay

i did really enjoy this video, i watched it yesterday but i felt like commenting because this was the newest post… is it just me or are TDW posts becoming more and more infrequent?

  • Dr. Winston O’Boogie

Yeah. Some people are just batshit crazy.

  • Michael

Exactly. Everyone is commending them on how happy they are, but really they’re just brainwashed. I’m sure tonnes of them feel unhappy to be trapped where they are but are afraid of serious consequences if they speak or act out. It’s so sad that they should feel so “privileged” that they’re government “allows” them nicer housing or regards them as more valuable because they wanted to be scientists. ):

  • SentWest

I agree. I think the most terrifying part of this movie, is that though the NK’s thought it was carefully calculated to show them in the best possible light, even their MiniTrue people have such a limited understanding of the outside world, they believe what they’ve presented here is a lovely rosy picture of their country.

Their propaganda campaign reminds me of the Nazis’, but with absolutely no ability to consider themselves from any perspective than what’s been programed. The Nazis look like cultural giants in comparison.

  • SentWest

They may also be under strict orders/threats/cultural pressure since birth to not present themselves in any way other than happy and devoted.

  • sarah

If they spoke disparagingly of their country to a foreign film crew, their entire families would be punished. They might actually believe deeply in their nation and their leader, but like you said: they’re the most privileged.

There’s nothing pretty about brainwashing. I know you meant their devotion is beautiful, but they’re devoted to something very empty and sad… just like the rest of us.. except we’re allowed to complain and don’t live in fear of torture if we speak negatively of our leaders.

  • Dan

On how to not be funny?

  • vice

vbs.tv already did this story. and they did it much better.

  • yes

    Echo. Fascinating

  • yes

They aren’t crazy. They just have no way of knowing otherwise.
