I think that you have to lift the glass at the sound speed, around 340 m/s. Like this, you can create an amount of energy which is kept inside the water by the Coriolis forces.

This video is obviously fake. There can’t be any air trapped in the cup at all for this to actually work and as the “slight spillage” when he removes the cardboard show, he had air in the cup.

If you watch it frame by frame you can see when the shot cuts from animation to real life when the water spills. there is no frame of the water actually losing form. Just the splash sound and next frame water has already just been spilled on the table. obvs fake, regardless of watching it in slow mo or not.

Why don’t you look up the trick using the quarter and plastic hanger too. You’ll spend hours and hours trying to get it right.

If you look closely he doesn’t even touch the ‘water’ to make it ‘fall’ ….it’s like an inch away and then the cut comes where the water falls. You can stop it at 1:47 and see it easily.

It could be fun to fool the kids perhaps.

The hanger\coin trick worked for me in the first half dozen tries. It isn’t hard at all once you balance the coin. Stopping was tricky, but not impossible.

Spin the cup FAST before you slide it up, see how he does it in the video? That little starter twist before he actually lifts the glass is the key. The farther and faster you can twist the better since it’s the momentum that is going to keep it stable and the more you do while the glass is still safely in contact with your table the easier it is.

Finally got this working. After about 20 tries with normal tap water, I switched to distilled water as suggested in the video (I work in a chemical lab so this was easier for me to obtain than for most people) and noticed a marked improvement, but still not quite holding. Then it occurred to me to do something to raise the surface tension. I cooled the water to 4 degrees celcius, and nailed on the second attempt. I’m so glad, I would have felt like a right twat if this guy was merely trolling.
